Presidential-directed projects are of the highest priority, and considered vital to national security. They are established by executive orders issued by the President of the United States. Examples would include development of the stealth fighter (F-117A) and bomber (B-2).

There are, of course, numerous classified projects of varying priority. They include technology demonstrations, systems upgrades, weapons integration, etc., and may be sponsored by the the military services, industry, or the intelligence community.
