Brian, I was on the X-15 program - the Beatty Tracking Station of the NASA High Range. Most of our launches were at Mud Lake, Delamar, Smith Ranch dry lakes. The furtherest launch was near Wendover in the #3 plane. I have quite a bit posted on this subject at: http://area51specialprojects.com In an earlier comment, someone inquired about Groom Lake. We wanted Groom Lake as a launch lake, but the Air Force and CIA refused to give NASA air superiority over Groom Lake during launch dates, so we went with Mud Lake instead. I'm sure security at Groom Lake played a role because an X-15 launch required weather flights and a detachment of rescue people at the launch lake to include medical, etc. None of these people were cleared for Groom Lake.
