The Astronomy boys/girls have been using array setups for some time.....VLA Radio Antenna Farm is one....21 miles and in a Y configuration......The input is computer massaged to appear as one large antenna presentation...(I suspect).

I would imagine the multiple antenna is also a safety factor.....if one antenna system goes bad there are 3 others to cover...
Redundancy is the name of the game today....Remember the F-22 has a dual computer setup...or Mirror image System...
