The MER project used several sites for different purposes to try and simulate Martian conditions ranging from Dry Lake beds and Duned areas. Just before launch final testing was done at an "Undisclosed Location". Honeybee Robotics did design the Rock Abrasion Tool. Other tests took place at the JPL labs where special sand was used to replicate the fine Martian soil or regolith. There was nothing Top Secret about the MER's. The thread on Reddit is not revealing anything new and in fact a load of rubbish really. Not sure if I was in a building or not, eh? Made us sleep in tents and eat in the outdoors etc. Zzzzzzzz
