On a lot of cars, particularly newer ones, the service engine light will come on at preset mileage points. And it's not necessarily a round number like 30,000 or 75,000 miles or whatever. Great way to get you into the dealer for service huh? Also, if your car has an oil life percentage gauge (my description), it needs to be reset manually when you change the oil. If you don't, the service engine light will come on when the oil life gauge gets low, regardless of how new the oil is. On my Honda with digital gauges, you can scroll through the odometer and tripometer to the oil life gauge, hold down the reset button for about 30 seconds or so and a RESET option pops up, select it and away you go. That will be $75 bucks. Might want to check with a mechanic anyway though, or just about any auto parts store can run a diagnostic scan for free.
