Have a look at the Firefox addon "Video DownloadHelper" - that will work for all (haven't found one that doesn't work yet) YouTube vids. Downloads as .flv and you can select what definition you want. Then get VLC Media Player (open source at Sourceforge) - it will play .flv

Converting .flv to .avi is a bit problematic.
