The article states the shells only cost $10,000! I'd venture to say that a conventional mortar shell costs $500 or less. The difference would certainly start adding up quickly if you use during many of them. Maybe in a few limited situations these would be beneficial but overall they certainly seemed overpriced. Seems like nobody in the military (or in their contractors organization) worries about the cost of anything these days. Technology is only usable if you can buy it in sufficient quantities. Most programs get canceled or their quantities so limited they really don't provide the benefits intended. Take the F-22 for example.
