Unless you're going to do very long-range air refueled missions from the US, you'd have to base them forward someplace, like in Italy. There, they'd get a LOT of media attention - it would be all over Twitter that "4 RAPTORS JUST LAUNCH AVIANO #ODYSSEY DAWN" and then the Libyans would have an idea that something "special" was coming in. Twitter is giving a pretty good picture of what is going in and out, and when. That wouldn't be the case in a WWIII situation in the Pacific against China; in such a case I'd bet web access around the pertinent bases goes bye-bye. Better to conserve airframe hours on the -22s for strategic threats. There aren't going to be any more of them.
