I actually looked into this a few years ago. Doing fieldwork in Nicaragua, I was able to get my hands on all the documents recovered from the downed plane, including the flight records. I knew about Helms' claim about the Groom connection (which he didn't footnote, as you point out), so I specifically looked for that in the docs. I didn't see any connection at all (i.e. no landings at Groom-related airfields DRA, TNX, TKM, etc...) - actually didn't see anything in the southwest at all. Most of the routes were between Florida and Honduras, with occasional landing in Costa Rica, if I remember correctly. There are a lot of interesting things in those documents, but Groom isn't one of them.
