The O-rings weren't faulty. The decision making process was. We've learned a lot since then.
The O-rings were designed within the parameters of the average Cape Canaveral launch. They were not designed for the weather conditions that existed at the time of this launch. The Morton (salt) Thiocol engineers (designers) expressed a concern. It was duly noted. The O-ring failed and Morton Thiaocol was blamed. The company split, changed it's name and the rest is history.
