During the formation flight, a B-58 was making an authorized pass through the supersonic corridor, well above the formation's altitude. As per standard procedure, pilots in the formation made sure to notice the relative position of this nearby traffic. It is possible that Joe Walker, in observing the B-58, may have inadvertently nudged his control stick back just a bit. This may have allowed his plane to slow down slightly and drift into the wingtip vortex from the XB-70.
