During the 1990s "red mercury" was a mystical substance associated with Russian nuclear smuggling and/or organized crime. Various magical properties were associated with it - boosting the yield of a fission weapon, a shorter path to uranium enrichment, etc. etc.
None of these claims were ever substantiated to the best of my knowledge, and the true composition of "red mercury", if it even existed, was a point of debate. "Mercury antimony oxide" was one term that I recall being used.

There were aspects of the red mercury legend that had basis in reality, but far more that did not.
