There may be some confusion here. Area 51 is not an employer, but a location used by various private companies and government agencies. People who work there are either employed by a private contractor, the Air Force or another government agency.

Private contractors are assigned to Groom as needed for the project the work on. When the project ends, their work at Area 51 ends and they go back to working at their "home" location.

Air Force personnel, like most military personnel, frequently change their home base. They rotate in and out of their duties at Area 51.

The cammos may be the exception. They work for a private contractor, and they are specifically hired to provide security at Groom. As far as I know, they work there semi-permanently, as long as the company they work for keeps the security contract.

The people I know who have worked there were there for anywhere from a few weeks to 5+ years. Then they were assigned to other duties or retired.
