I think I read in either Tibbet's or Sweeney's books that the tail character was changed just before the mission
as a tactical ruse (disinformation) to throw off the Japanese (and others) about which unit was involved in the dropping of Atomic bombs. I've lent them both out (a bad thing as they were signed copies) and when I get them back, I'll double check.
