Ok..after further research...

The U-1 Otter was a Canadian aircraft built by DHC. The first aircraft were purchased (as U-1As) by the US Army in around 1952/3, and by the USN in January 1955. These were were small rugged single piston-engined aircraft able to operate out of rough unprepared airstrips with small freight or passenger loads. These dates (and designation) pre-date the U-2s first flight.

The U-3 is a light twin engined Cessna aircraft based on the 310. It was originally designated L-27 in 1957 when it was ordered by the USAF, and changed to U-3 a couple of years later.
