Ok..after further research... The U-1 Otter was a Canadian aircraft built by DHC. The first aircraft were purchased (as U-1As) by the US Army in around 1952/3, and by the USN in January 1955. These were were small rugged single piston-engined aircraft able to operate out of rough unprepared airstrips with small freight or passenger loads.
