During the 1980s, Lockheed began a Product Excellence campaign that spawned a number of patches for the personnel in various buildings at the production facilities. When personnel from Building 199 in Burbank moved to Building 636 in Palmdale, there was a competition to design a new patch. The final design was a composite of concepts submitted by John Becker and Tom Doll.

Becker was inspired by a quotation on a picture hanging on the wall of Building 636: "Some people look at a limit and see an end. Others perceive a new beginning..." Doll submitted a design that featured a generic futuristic aircraft originating from Palmdale and heading for a star (the traditional Lockheed symbol). As many as 600 of these patches were produced to represent the Building 636 personnel, who were responsible for providing composite components for the F-117A.
