We all know of the rumor and speculation on just how did the Lockheed U-2 get its designation. Well, here is how - as it was told to me by a former Skunk Works employee. Though it is only hearsay, it does sound plausible. Here goes. Simple math. Kelly Johnson, while doodling on a piece of paper, jotted down the following: CL-282 (1st proposal), CL-400, the un-obtainable. Kelly, it is said added the two numbers of each of those aircraft - CL-282 & CL-400 - 282 + 400 = 682 devided by unit 2 (682/2) = 341. The "U" in the U-2's designation came from the devisor or "Unit 2." Thus, he now had a designation for the spy plane and a tail, which came out as U-2 341. Interesting to say the least.
