This is a pretty common phenomenon known as subsidence.

Years ago, someone reported seeing a contrail that looked like "doughnuts on a rope" (probably just ordinary subsidence) and sparked all kinds of speculation about pulse-jet engines. Now, there are frequent Internet postings of subsidence photos, usually along with claims that it is proof of "Aurora."
