Fortunately it seems that it ended well. The flight plan for UAL 9947 was filed for FL240, but the track log shows they never went above 10,000ft (see the attached link for the track log). I talked to an ex-commercial airline pilot that we both know in Rachel, and he said that what they did on Sunday was standard procedure for loss of cabin pressure. Apparently even with oxygen masks the passengers don't have very long at commercial cruise altitude. The pilots get pure oxygen, but not the passengers...
