It looks like he did it for the money.Obviously there is more to the story. This story demonstrates why people with very high security clearances are constantly being watched. Simple things like an expensive divorce, bad or failed investment, or even a professional slight can cause even a highly educated person to exercise extremely poor judgment. In the case of spying, intelligence operatives try to leverage personality flaws in order to recruit a resource. He knew full well the consequences of his actions. In some cases these types of people think it's a game and they believe that they are too smart to get caught. In other words ego out of check. Sounds like the beginning of a Tom Clancy novel.
