I did see one Nevada State Patrol car on the road out to GLR but no S.O. at all and I'd be surprised if they make many trips to the area per day on normal patrol unless called out. So, there's really no one there to hear you scream for "help" if you do run into trouble and like a good spare, extra water, appropriate clothing........it's best to fully prepared for such a trip should something really unfortunate appear in the offing.
From having read about the area for years before my visit a huge concern for me was restrictions on firearms carriage in the process of driving out. I reviewed all that I could find and seemed I was clear to vehicle carry TX/NM/AZ. Nevada, as stated above, has some county-based laws but they weren't a problem for where we were going.
