It's bogus. Consider the material they are presenting. They aren't talking to "the tower". The recording you hear would most likely be LA Center, Salt Lake Center or Nellis Approach depending on where they actually are. Alamo area is LA. Tonopah is SLC. The controller's comment that they didn't have info "out there" would suggest he is remote, not local. Those planes weren't trying to "scare them off". I've had that happen to me. Most likely spliced footage of returning Red Flag or Nellis traffic. If you fly around out there long enough you will see that.
