As for the mountain side hangars, there has been some speculation, but I am not aware of any evidence for such a feature at Area 51. I would be curious to see what our readers think about this, though. Do you have a link to the AWST article or any other related links you could post here? Or about the European hangars you mentioned? As for your question re. optics: After trying out several different set-ups, I ended up with a Celestron C-5 spotting scope. It is robust and compact enough to fit in a backpack and you can use it for direct observation or to attach a digital camera. I am using it with an older model Canon D-60. The optics of the C-5 are good enough to make the atmosphere, no the lenses, the limiting factor.
