I am not a hunter, so I don't know what specific features may be needed there. A lot of people that come out to the area use GMRS radios. They allow you to stay in touch if your group splits up, but the range is limited. The advertised 5 or even 8 miles are on open terrain. Typically the range is considerably less. There is an emergency channel, but as far as I know it is not monitored. Most GMRS radios can also receive the weather alert channels, but coverage may not be good in remote areas.
