I think the main reason why you would only find shards of the primered substructure is the fact that the outer aluminum skin on all aircraft is not much thicker than your average soda can.

At the speeds and forces with which that aircraft impacted the ground, most all of it would have disintegrated into nothingness...

While interior ribs and spars and stringers and longerons and bulkheads that actually make up the structure of an aircraft are much thicker and pron to cracking and chipping during impact thus you finding many small pieces of structure as opposed to any of the skin...
