ABOUT SONIC BOOMS:

Were any recorded to be analyzed? The nature of the booms could be fairly easily determined by an expert.

3 A/C in echelon formation, Mach # 1 +, may sound like 3 booms, even if it was actually 6 in close pairs. Read on.

When I was an Army grunt getting training at Fairchild AFB in 1978, this is what my fast moving friends in the Air Farce told me about booms:

They are usually in sets of 2, sometimes so close together that they sound like 1. The higher & faster the aircraft generating it, the more distinct the double boom.

EX:
-An F-4 at 40,000, mach # 1.5, = a near single boom.
-An R-71 at 80,000, mach # 2.8 = a double boom.
