As 9th life said, that second one you mention is Sedan Crater, formed by "Operation Plowshare". It was an experiment to use nuclear power for large earth moving projects.

The numerous craters in the surrounding area are from underground nuclear tests. The explosion creates an underground cavern which eventually collapses forming a crater on the surface. Sometimes the Nevada Test Site tour buses will drive into one of these.
