Interesting quote: "There are a number of interesting questions associated with this work, for example, why use Spaceport America? Lockheed is playing up the shadowy elements, saying it was developed using five-years worth of internal R&D as part of a "mini-Skunk Works." But if you really want to keep something shadowy, why not use the real Area 51 in Nevada? It does seem likely that Lockheed at one point received at least some funding, possibly classified, from the Pentagon for this work. Why? Because it's very rare for defense companies to spend internal R&D money without an associated program funded by the Pentagon. More fundamentally, defense companies don't tend to invest their own funds in projects unless there is a very clear idea of who the customer will be."
