John told me he took the photos in June 1978. He said he rolled up to the gate behind another car. While the guards were clearing the people in that car, John took his pictures and stashed his film. When the guard got around to talking to him, John started telling him all about the history of Area 51. Since the guard never saw the camera, he let John turn around and leave without any further hassle. This took place at a time when the guard post was technically on public land, along with the road and even part of the lakebed.
