Approaching from the west would mean a trip across the old nuclear testing range.......not sure what the radiation counts are these days but I guess one could get an idea via the internet. Also, transitting live bombing ranges, you may be able to avoid falling munitions by looking at the calendar but who can say what may be laying around from times past? An unexploded air-dropped 500lb or 1000lb iron bomb is not necessarily just going to be laying there on the surface in clear view.....they could be buried or semi buried depending upon the impact. In addition to these are the small 22-lb practice bombs in use for exercises.........small, but large enough to make a nasty mess of a mule and passenger if detonated accidentally.

Then, as mentioned above, the observations being done by the EG&G security unit and stations like Tolicha. The security of a location like Groom would not be complete unless the integrity of the entire perimeter was guaranteed. Are NTR personnel allowed access to Area 51? No, by no means is it guaranteed. So, one would have to reasonably believe that the security is equally layered among the entirety of the Groom facilty as it is at Groom Lake Road or the North Gate, etc.

So, to answer Jackhethorn's original question, it doesn't seem likely or possible that approaching from the West means any easier access. With there ability to monitor personally, electronically, and in the infra-red on a constant basis it would seem that anyone approaching via mule-back would be known days in advance of any near approach to the boundary.

So, to the average "Joe", no, approaching in this manner is no more effective and likely more dangerous than any other method.
