The Skunk Works name has been associated with both stories, i.e. the Li'l Abner strip, AND the chemical plant across the road at the original Burbank location.

If you really want to know everything there is to know (well, almost everything), then I can recommend the book 'Skunk Works' by Ben Rich. Rich was Kelly Johnson's successor as head of the Skunk Works, and ran it during the F-117 development.

Skunk Works has also been involved with the on-again, off-again X-33 program, the F-22, and the X-35 JSF candidate, as well as the Stealth Ship trialled in the 1980's and just recently resurrected.

The term 'Skunk Works' is now commonly used when referring to internal hi-tech semi-autonomous think-tanks that many corporations (not necessarily aerospace) are now developing. Boeing (formerly McDonnel Douglas) has its Phantom Works at St Louis, and this is based on the Skunk Works concept also.
