The nearest public airport to Groom is Alamo at 31 miles. From Groom to the restricted area (4808N) boundary to the East is about 12 miles. Alamo is another 19 miles or so. Let's say a plane flying in the MOA but just outside the restricted border at 9000 feet msl (1 mile agl) lost an engine. Theoretically, at that altitude, a Cessna 172 for example, at about 3/4 gross weight could glide approximately 15 miles in no wind at about 60 KIAS(knots). That means that while they could glide to Groom, they wouldn't make it to Alamo.
