since I had read in an earlier posts that there have been some mountain lions sighted in the area, I would seriously consider carrying a handgun too.
I wouldn't mind seeing and photographing one from a distance, but if there's a surprise meeting, I rather have a gun with me if it doesn't decide to run away.
these things have killed enough hikers and joggers in the california area.
