I used to work at the main maintenance base of a major airline. They have a large hangar like the new one being built where you can park two 747s, and another hangar where you can work of 5 smaller aircrafts (A320s, B767s, etc...), machine shops, paint shops, engine repair shops, offices, cafeteria, gym, credit union, etc... all taking up less than 25% of the space that Area 51 takes and there's 5000 people working there every day.

I'd say with 1000 people, Groom lake base must look pretty deserted at times.

They might have tunnels that go from one hangar to the machine shops in an adjacent building or something like that to be able to move parts around on rainy or cold days (or when Ivan is flying overhead), but don't expect a big James Bond-like underground base.
