On the drive to Tikaboo last year out of our convoy of SUV's, two had flats on the way there. Neither were suspicious in nature, just rough roads. A Montero is a good choise, I've used them there in the past. Bring along enough water in case you do get stuck. One flat tire is bad, two will make you a pedestrian in VERY bad country. Bring along a cell phone and look for high ground if you need to make a call. the reception is spotty at best, but I've made calls from the ascent to Tikaboo, so it's possible. Get a local number of the Service station and/or tow truck operator in Alamo so if you can contact them they can help you out. Read up on some of the trip reports on this website to get a feel for what you'll find. The roads to and around the gates are usually passable even for a Ford Taurus, but off-road for even a few feet, and even some SUV's will be in trouble. Good luck, obey the signs, don't let the Cammo dudes intimidate you; stay in public lands and they can glare at you, but that's all, and above all respect the desert. You'll be a long way from a McDonald's, Hospital or Goodyear's so go prepaered.
