Actually at one point (White Sage Flat) the road cuts inside a corner of the range by a mile and a half! This is going by the USGS topo maps.

(Ten years ago) I talked to a ranger (BLM) I ran into back there about it. He said the main road was open to the public and when I queried about hiking he said we had to remain in that valley. So the way I take it is that as the map says "indefinite boundary" they treat the mountain range to the west as the boundary.

Also all roads heading west off of the main road are well signed for official vehicles only.
