News has reached me that 2 young Marines, a Lance Corporal, 20, and a PFC, 19, were killed in a freak accident when their armored personnel carrier overturned aboard Bangor Submarine Base, Washington last week.

The two Marines were part of Marine Corps Security Force Company assiigned to Bangor Submarine Base, and Strategtic Weapons Facility Pacific (west of Seattle, Washington).

The accident happened while securing the area during movement of ballistic missiles for movement and preparations for loading to assigned nuclear submarines attached to the base.

The unusual incident is currently under investigation at this time by order of the Inspector General, United States Marines.

Both had been members of the platoon from this MCSF company which had recently returned to the Seattle area from deployment and participation in gear-testing exercises in the Nevada desert at an undisclosed location.
