RAF Machrihanish

Hi,

I'm sure all of you have heard of RAF Machrihanish.

I have just read on Wikipedia that 'The base is now on what is termed "care and maintenance" — this allows the airfield to be used by civilian airlines, which may conduct scheduled and charter flights from the aerodrome. '

This got me thinking, could the RAF and USAF been conducting experimental aircraft at the base as stated?

For the RAF to open the base to commercial airliners kinda makes me think it was just another air base and nothing more even happened.....

What do guys think?

Cheers,

Jimi182
