Actually, Area 51 is the name that was assigned to the Groom Lake test site when the land was annexed by NTS in June 1958. It is labled as such on old NTS maps, some of which may be seen here:

It has been mistakenly reported that the number 51 referred to a "fallout grid," but this is not the case.
