British researchers are claiming mobile phone masts could render stealth
bombers obsolete. The ì1.4 billion (dollar) planes are virtually impossible
to detect using conventional radar systems. But scientists at Roke Manor
Research in Hampshire claim to have discovered a way of pinpointing a
plane's position by tapping into mobile phone networks.

Peter Lloyd, from the research laboratory's sensor department, says the
system uses special aerials to track distortions present in mobile phone
calls. Mobile phones pose a threat to the planes because calls sent between
masts bounce off the underside of the aircraft. Lloyd says he cannot discuss
the technique in any more detail because "it is a classified matter".
