Interesting, I always thought the hook was in case they over shot the Runway and didn’t have enough room to land. Then follow the hook around to put you back on the downwind leg for another landing attempt. I didn’t think they would actually be "ON" the lakebed. But I guess that makes sense when you are a Flight Test Center, someone is sure to keep going after the Runway ends! Even Southwest did that a few times (Burbank and Midway). Oh, crap, I’m on a Southwest flight to LAX tomorrow morning! Lol!!!
