Hank is a frequent Nellis observer and very knowledgible in ATC landing/arrival procedures. Aicraft generally do best when they land and take-off into the wind. At Nellis, they often deviate from this when wind speeds are less than 10-12 knots. For noise abatement and some safety issues, they often depart on Rwy. 03 and recover on Rwy. 21.This is commonly done when wind speeds are on the lower end of 10-12 knots.

'Heavies' generally use Rwy 21L because the instrument approaches to Nellis are to that runway. Instrument approaches to Rwy 03 are generally not possible because
of McCarran airspace. When the winds become a factor and Rwy. 03 is needed, they circle to 03 from 21 or do a straight-in off of Craig Ranch (five miles west).

A major deviation to arrival procedures to Rwy. 21 in the last year, has been the use of overhead approaches (like the fighters) to Rwy. by 'heavies.' On more than one occasion, I have seen C-17s, E-3 AWACSs and B-1s do the 360 degree overhead patterns. Great for photographers near the speedway!

I have some more info for the airshow and will post up in the very near future. Most arrivals are scheduled
for Thursday and a full practice on Friday.

BTW One or two Eurofighters are scheduled!
