No mention of Helicopters in the news articles, but the length and shape of the towed sensor is much more compelling than any of the other mentioned possibilities.

We'll probably never know what it really was, mostly because of press indifference and where the incident happened. If this object had flown over runways in Class B airspace, say LAX, ATL, DFW, etc., we'd be getting a lot more follow-up information.
