The Global Hawk, to my knowledge, follows a pre-programmed path. What it doesn't do is "think", which is something a real pilot can do. If you want to run the UAV by remote control, there is always the problem of jamming. Frequency hopping and to some degree direct sequence spread spectrum makes the radio less likely to be jammed, but every system has it's breaking point. Aren't some of the smart bombs really just guided by a person using a very long fiber optic (jam proof) link?

Anyone who goes to the Edwards open house should make it a point to talk to the Global Hawk personel. They usually have a "pilot" present who really doesn't hold much back.
