There was some sort of research done in that direction. I don't have the link amny more, but it may still be somewhere on this site.
Basically the idea was to confuse and demoralize enemy troops by projecting images in the sky. Of course it could be used for all sorts of stealth applications as well.
Some of the stories about light phenomena around Groom in the 1980's and early 1990's may be related to tests and experiments with such systems.
