Would it be safe to say the built-in stairs are unpopular due to maintenance and operations concerns?

Corrosion and weight factors are obvious. 1500 lbs. means more passengers, fuel, and cargo to take it's place. Are the Janets operating at capacity passenger-wise? I recently flew from SDO to SMF on a Southwest 737. "Packed like sardines" is an understatement.

Regarding the aircraft that have had the stairs removed...is the resulting space useful for anything?
