As far as I have been able to determine the "chemtrails' myth started with the plan to inject a chemical into the exhaust of the B-2 to prevent formation of contrails. It didn't work. The B-2 was redesigned for low altitude penetration (no contrails). The failed scheme entered the conspiracy theory realm as a sinister fact.
