Commercial airlines don't always use the same plane for a given flight. This is easy to detect via mode-s, which often has the flight number in the callsign field. The callsign is entered by the user, but the mode-S number is hard-wired to the plane, so with a database (log) on that mode-s number, you can see the flight numbers that particular plane has flown.

That said, since the flight is what is scheduled, it is easier to use the WWWxxx format, and use whatever plane is available. I assume the Beach Janets are not on a schedule, so they use the N-number.
