A GPS is a must. You should also investigate getting one new as they are not very expensive anymore, and the newer models (from the last 3 years) are substantially more sensitive than the old models. Something like the Garmin Etrex is a good starting point. Check out www.tvnav.com . A model with a PC cable will help in managing waypoints.

PS: the hike is a bit more than "moderately challenging". The trip down the hill requires a**-surfing down the loose shale, so have an extra pair of pants to change into when you get back to the car, or just wear two pairs of pants. Watch out for lightning storms.
