Our 2005 panorama was taken through a Celestron C-5 spotting scope mounted to a Canon D-60 digital camera. In that configuration the equivalent focal length is 2000mm. I have experimented with many different setups before, and I think that this is the best compromise of lens power and portability. Not sure if a larger lens would result in significantly better quality, given the distance and camera shake due to wind.
